The Minister's Award for Environmental Excellence recognizes those that have made special contributions to improving Ontario's environment.


Public Works and Environmental Services is responsible for the effective and efficient planning, engineering, maintenance, rehabilitation, and operation of the municipal road system, parks and open space, solid waste management services, water treatment and supply, wastewater collection and treatment, storm water management, development approvals, and general engineering services. 

Here are some interesting facts and figures that help put the responsibilities of Public Works and Environmental Services into perspective:

  • Approximately 1600 lane kilometers (kms) of roadways
  • 120,000 square meters of sidewalks
  • 50 bridges and 32 culverts greater than 3 meters
  • 16 railway level crossings
  • 7 sand/salt domes/sheds
  • Operation/maintenance of 1 licensed aggregate pit
  • Operation/maintenance of 1 landfill site
  • 6 maintenance yards
  • 65 parks
  • Frankford Golf Course
  • Cemeteries
  • Two Marinas
  • Waterfront Trails
  • Approximately 160 kms of storm sewers plus approximately 3300 catchbasins plus open ditches
  • Approximately 150 vehicles and heavy equipment utilizing approximately $300,000 of fuel per annum
  • 28 sets of traffic signals and approximately 3000 streetlights
  • 4 water treatment plants, 6 water towers, and 3 booster stations servicing approximately 7700 residential homes
  • 3 wastewater treatment plants and 13 sanitary pumping stations
  • 219 kms of watermains plus hydrants and valves
  • 232 kms of sanitary sewers plus maintenance holes
  • Winter control operations - approximately 13,000 tonnes of salt, 18,000 tonnes of winter sand, and 100 m3 of liquid de-icing materials utilized on average per annum
  • Garbage and Recycling - collection and disposal of approximately 5,000 tonnes of garbage per annum and collection of approximately 4,000 tonnes of recycling per annum
  • Wastewater/Sewage - treatment of approximately 6000 megalitres of wastewater/sewage and disposal of approximately 24,000 m3 of sludge per annum
  • Water - supply of approximately 7000 megalitres of potable water per annum in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act

The total 2009 Operations Budget for Public Works was $19 million and the 2009 Capital Budget was $20 million for a total Operating and Capital Budget of $39 million.
