Half Load Season

Half Load Season will begin @ 12:00a.m. Monday, February 22, 2021 - May 1, inclusive.

Half loads definition: Weight restriction season happens in spring. The City of Quinte West and local municipalities restrict the operation of motor vehicles on designated roads. This affects vehicles that are heavier than 5,000 kilograms or five tonnes per axle. This policy is part of the Highway Traffic Act. In the spring, frozen roads start to thaw. The thawing water may not drain out of the gravel that is under the pavement. This is because the surrounding soil may be frozen or too solid. The water will soak into the gravel. When the water is absorbed, the pavement will temporarily lose strength. When this happens, the pavement or surface treatment cannot support vehicles that are heavier than 5,000 kilograms or five tonnes per axle. That is why municipalities post half load restrictions.

Most public utility and emergency vehicles are exempt. Some vehicles can be exempt. Other vehicle exemptions may  include:

  • Liquid or gas heating fuel

  • Livestock feed

  • Poultry or milk

  • Vehicles operating on behalf of a municipality

2020 Wild Parsnip Roadside Spraying Program

Vegetation control along the City of Quinte West roadsides is an important part of road maintenance and controlling the noxious and invasive weeds is an important objective of the City of Quinte West.

The Public Works and Environmental Services Department has been proactively mapping out wild parsnip infestation levels across the City of Quinte West roadsides. The identification of wild parsnip collected from staff has been used to identify the control areas for the 2020 strategy. The City of Quinte West intends to control wild parsnip in areas city-wide along rural roadsides. The integrated management strategy includes monitoring, mapping, the use of herbicide, mowing and evaluation.  Roadside herbicide spraying is due to commence October 5 - 30th, 2020, weather permitting, to approximately 400 locations as needed within the City of Quinte West.  Monitoring and mapping are ongoing.

Please click here for the Notice of Pesticide Use.
