Health & Safety Policy Statement

The City of Quinte West is committed to protecting its employees from work-related injury and illness by providing and maintaining safe and healthy working conditions through the legislative requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The City will take every reasonable precaution to fulfill this commitment. To fulfill this commitment, the City will:

  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and all applicable regulations
  • Meet or exceed health, safety and ergonomics standards; applying the precautionary principle as needed
  • Supporting the Joint Health & Safety Committee and its representatives to meet their legislative obligations
  • Maintain an ongoing commitment to the Internal Responsibility System  

Internal Responsibility System

  • Provide all City employees with training and education specific to job requirements
  • Ensure supervisory staff are competent, as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act

Guiding Principles

The principles outlined below will guide the development and implementation of the City's health and safety policies, programs, and procedures. 

  • Protecting the health and safety of all City employees is the City's highest priority.
  • The Internal Responsibility System will function through the combined efforts of all parties.
  • Due diligence will be demonstrated in the implementation of health, safety, and ergonomic standards.
  • Management will take an active leadership role in promoting a safe and healthy work environment free of workplace violence and harassment.
  • Supervisors will ensure that safe working practices and healthy work conditions are maintained in accordance with legislative requirements in their assigned areas.
  • Senior management will allocate appropriate resources to manage and support health and safety program initiatives.
  • Management, employees, and unions will share the responsibility for reducing work related injuries and illnesses by ensuring that jobs are performed in a safe and healthy manner.
  • Health and safety procedures will focus on the prevention of injuries and illnesses based on generally accepted industry standards at a minimum.
  • Information about health and safety programs will be made accessible to all employees.
  • Employees will be advised of all known health, safety, and ergonomic hazards in their work and of appropriate measures to address these hazards. Appropriate measures will come from the members of the JHSC and management through a joint effort.
  • All employees will be advised of and trained on the City's Early Safe Return To Work program
  • Programs and policies will be monitored annually at a minimum or as required to ensure they meet legislative and City requirements
