Trenton Wastewater Treatment Plant (TWWTP) Phase 1B Lifecycle Upgrades

The TWWTP Project 1B Lifecycle Upgrades Project is the first phase in a multi-phase, multi-year implementation program to upgrade the TWWTP (in excess of $70 million for overall project), in order to meet the more stringent provincial and federal effluent criteria.  This project is a "stepping stone" for a future project during which new Biological Aerated Filters (BAF) will be constructed to remove unionized ammonia from the effluent stream and increase capacity.

 Headworks Upgrades - Funded Project ($3,744,768) 2/3 Federal/Provincial

The project will considerably improve the performance and reliability of preliminary treatment and help the plant to meet its rated capacity.  Specific measures include reconfiguration of screening and grit removal process sequence, replacement of the existing screen with two new fine screens, replacement of deteriorating grit tanks with two new vortex grit tanks, installation of a new screenings washing and compacting system, new grit pumps and classifiers, and implementation of a new building odour control system to reduce air emissions to the City's Centennial Park, a popular waterfront recreational area that surrounds the plant.

 Additional Lifecycle Upgrades

This project will recover and improve the existing primary and secondary treatment process through life cycle upgrades, and through process modifications to optimize treatment performance. The detailed project components include seismic upgrades to the existing tanks, installation of new high-efficiency aeration blowers, reconfiguration of air distribution piping, installation of automated scum removal system, modifications to the flight and chain sludge collector, implementation of aeration tank step-feed operation for wet weather operations, replacement of boiler that utilizes methane produced in the treatment process, new LED lighting, and general lifecycle replacements for various pumps,  valves and isolation gates.  The outside facade will get a new facelift with block/brick/siding veneer.

This project will allow the City to continue treating wastewater generated by local industry and residents, which will further promote a stronger industrial and residential base in the City of Quinte West.
