The Regional Local Food BR+E

Local partners

Objective

The first of its kind; the Regional Local Food BR+E project crossed several jurisdictions and included partnershps both entrenched and introductory.

The project offered participants a unique opportunity to explore relationships between:

  • local government
  • non-government organizations
  • local food businesses, and
  • stakeholders in the local food movement

The recommendations developed by each community can help local food producers, processors and retailers find new markets and identify opportunities to increase revenue.

This project demonstrated how a number of jurisdictions can work in partnership to help develop the local food sector in ways that are specific to each community, while also making progress on a series of common regional goals.

Farm Food Safety Handbook

Farm Food Safety

The development of a Farm Food Safety Handbook was just one recommendation of the Regional Local Foods Business Retention and Expansion Action Plan, and is designed to increase awareness about the importance of safe food handling techniques, and to ensure that safety remains in the spotlight for all on-farm food handling in our community.

The Handbook was created in partnership with the Hastings & Prince Edward Counties Health Unit.

The Ontario Health Protection and Promotion Act establishes the food safety standards and food premises regulations within the province. In our municipality, it is Hastings & Prince Edward Counties Health Unit that enforces these standards.

The Municipal Role

The Hastings & Prince Edward Counties Health Unit is responsible for:

  • Disseminating information concerning food safety to the community
  • Inspecting all non-federally registered food processing plants (this includes bakeries, food service and food purveyor premises)
  • Responding to food safety complaints
