Competitive Cost Advantage

Quinte West reflects Canada's competitive advantage in manufacturing. KPMG ranked Canada #2 for competitive cost advantage in the software, research and development and 3rd in the corporate services category (2008). KPMG identified Canada as having the second lowest manufacturing cost structure in the world, behind Mexico (2008). The City of Quinte West was ranked #1 for competitive cost advantage rankings in all industrial sectors against communities of similar size (Belleville, London, Sault Ste. Marie, St. Catharines, and Windsor-Essex).

Available Industrial Lands

The North Murray Industrial Park in Trenton Ward contains 50 acres of developable land and is zoned for Yard Storage and Heavy Manufacturing. There is convenient access to the Industrial Park from Hamilton Road, just south of the 401, running east from Sidney Street. Take Exit 526 Glen Miller Road and head south. The Industrial Park is fully serviced, competitively priced and has many attractive selling points.  Building Permit fees are often included in the purchase price of the land as is the Site Plan Control.

A variety of sites are available at the Tremur Lake Industrial Land site located on the west side of Wooler Road just south of Telephone Road.

The City of Quinte West is committed to minimizing red tape and maximizing your investment with faster Site Plan Control (SPC) approvals, Building Permits, and more.

Development Approvals/Permits

Site Plan Control (SPC) approval is required for the development of industrial land sites. SPC approval can be granted in stages to coincide with the development plan with an average processing time of 2 to 4 weeks. Building permits can also be issued in stages concurrent with site plan approval. Industrial development is exempt from the payment of development charges within the City of Quinte West. There are no upper tier or educational development charges in place for Quinte West.

Business Retention & Expansion

The City of Quinte West implemented a Business Retention & Expansion (BR+E) program for the Industrial sector in 2007 and 2011, along with a Retail/Commercial (BR+E) in 2008 and 2014. This project involved regular interviews with local businesses to identify their needs and concerns and to assess where assistance could be provided. As a result of the success of the BR+E projects, the City of Quinte West will continue to incorporate BR+E initiatives in its business plans.

As a result of comments received from local businesses, the City of Quinte West has responded with the following initiatives:

  • Completing specific infrastructure and streetscape improvements
  • Implementing improved signage (e.g., Industrial Park monument signage, gateway signage, and billboards)
  • Implementing several labour market initiatives
  • Organizing seminars and career fairs to assist local businesses
  • Establishing frequent interaction between City Hall and local industries to ensure industry satisfaction
